Historic Wild and Scenic Protection for Montana

The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System was created from the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968 by Congress. The champion of water conservation's mission is to preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in free-flowing conditions, for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

And for the first time in over 50 years, Montana has overwhelming support to protect nearly 585 miles of rivers and creeks across the state.

The Montana Headwaters Legacy Act was formally introduced into Congress by Senator Jon Tester in 2021. With the backing of 80% of Montana residents, this bill would safeguard 385 miles of ecosystems east of the continental divide. Many of Montana's famed waters would forever be protected from new and potentially harmful developments. Some notable watersheds include sections of the Madison River, the Upper Yellowstone River, a large part of the Gallatin River near Big Sky, and the state's most cherished and threatened river, the Smith.

In addition to the Headwaters Legacy Act, the Crown of the Continent Proposal would provide Wild and Scenic protection west of the divide, encompassing about 200 miles. Although this equally important proposed bill has not been endorsed by a Montana Congressman yet, its success is likely. Once the proposal gains representation, some of the state's most pristine waters would be preserved. Those bodies of water include many remote and wild areas in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and the world-famous Rock Creek.

Together, these two grassroots acts of legislation could do more for the state of Montana than seen in half a century. There is still a long way to go in the legislative process and more support is needed.
